things to do: historical
Beaumaris Castle
Begun in 1295, this unfinished castle is the last and largest of King Edward I's Welsh fortifications. Designed by the king's mason-architect, Master James of St George, it is a perfect example of a concentrically planned castle. Formidable defences survive, surrounded by a partly restored moat, home to the castle's swans and ducks. New visitor centre and gift shop now open. Open all year

Bodelwyddan Castle
Set in 260 Acres of parkland between Chester and Llandudno. An ideal stop off on the way. There is the historic house and museum with a free audio tour available. It houses part of the national portrait Gallery and many exhibitions throughout the year. Castle also boasts large areas of formal garden and natural woodland and a really good play area for the little ones. They also cater for schools with affordable group rates, self guided tours, special workshops, woodland walk and an orienteering course. Open all year

Caernarfon Castle
One of the many Castle built by King Edward I, along the north Wales Coast, to keep the native welsh in check. Caernarfon Castle was designed as a royal palace and seat of Government for north Wales. In fact the first English Prince of Wales was born here in 1284. A lot bigger than a lot of the Castles and again the old town is found inside the walls that surround the castle
